About the Program

Advancing Climate
Resilience in Uganda

Uganda faces rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, deforestation, wetland degradation, biodiversity loss, and growing waste management challenges.

These environmental pressures directly impact food security, water availability, livelihoods, and public health across vulnerable communities. NCCDO's comprehensive program is designed to deliver lasting, community-driven solutions that align with Uganda's national climate commitments and sustainable development priorities.

Community-OwnedParticipatory and inclusive approach empowering youth, women, and farmer groups
Measurable ImpactStructured monitoring and evaluation framework tracking concrete outcomes
Nationally AlignedAligned with Uganda's climate commitments and sustainable development priorities
Strategic PartnershipsCollaborating with UNDP, GEF, NFA, NEMA, WWF and national institutions
The Challenge

Environmental Pressures Facing Uganda

Uganda's communities face a convergence of climate and environmental challenges that threaten ecosystems, food security, and livelihoods.

🌡️Rising Temperatures

Increasing heat stress affecting agriculture, human health, and water availability across all regions.

🌧️Erratic Rainfall

Unpredictable weather patterns causing droughts and floods that devastate crops and livelihoods.

🌲Deforestation

Large-scale tree loss degrading ecosystems, increasing erosion, and reducing carbon sequestration capacity.

💧Wetland Degradation

Encroachment and pollution destroying vital water sources and biodiversity habitats.

🗑️Waste Management

Inadequate systems leading to pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and public health risks.

🦁Biodiversity Loss

Habitat destruction threatening Uganda's globally recognized wildlife and natural resource base.

Strategic Intervention Areas

Six Pillars of Environmental Action

Each program is designed as a standalone intervention with cross-cutting benefits — together they form a comprehensive, systems-level approach to climate resilience.

01
🌲
Reforestation &
Landscape Restoration
Program 01

Community-Led Reforestation and Landscape Restoration

Deforestation and land degradation are major contributors to climate vulnerability in Uganda. NCCDO implements a structured reforestation and agroforestry program to restore degraded ecosystems and increase tree cover, enhancing carbon sequestration and soil fertility.

Establishment of community-managed tree nurseries
Planting indigenous and climate-resilient species
Promotion of agroforestry systems integrating trees with crops
Annual large-scale community tree planting campaigns
Monitoring tree survival rates and ecosystem recovery
Partner: National Forestry Authority (NFA)
02
🌾
Climate-Smart
Agriculture
Program 02

Climate-Smart Agriculture and Food Security

Agriculture is the backbone of rural livelihoods but remains highly vulnerable to climate shocks. NCCDO promotes climate-smart practices to increase productivity while reducing environmental impact, building resilience to climate variability.

Training farmers in conservation agriculture techniques
Introduction of drought-resistant and early-maturing crop varieties
Soil fertility improvement through organic manure and composting
Promotion of water-efficient irrigation systems
Soil and water conservation structures to prevent land degradation
Partner: Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry & Fisheries
03
💧
Water Resource
Protection
Program 03

Water Resource Protection and Wetland Conservation

Wetlands and water sources are increasingly threatened by encroachment, pollution, and unsustainable land use. NCCDO places water conservation at the center of climate adaptation and ecosystem health, improving access and preserving aquatic biodiversity.

Community sensitization on wetland and riparian zone protection
Restoration of degraded water catchment areas
Promotion of rainwater harvesting systems
Community-led monitoring of water sources
Reduction of waste dumping in rivers and wetlands
Partner: National Environment Management Authority (NEMA)
04
♻️
Waste Management &
Circular Economy
Program 04

Integrated Waste Management and Circular Economy Solutions

Improper waste management contributes to environmental pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. NCCDO introduces structured community-level waste management systems that reduce contamination while creating sustainable green employment opportunities for youth and women.

Monthly community clean-up campaigns
Household waste segregation initiatives
Organic waste composting for agriculture
Plastic collection and recycling partnerships
Youth-led green enterprise development
Focus: Youth & Women Green Entrepreneurship
05
☀️
Renewable Energy &
Clean Cooking
Program 05

Renewable Energy and Clean Cooking Solutions

Overdependence on firewood and charcoal drives deforestation and indoor air pollution. NCCDO promotes renewable energy and clean cooking technologies to reduce forest pressure, lower household energy costs, and support Uganda's clean energy transition.

Promotion of solar lighting systems
Distribution and training on improved energy-efficient cookstoves
Youth training in solar installation and maintenance
Advocacy for small-scale renewable energy in schools and households
Focus: Improved health, lower costs & reduced deforestation
06
🦋
Biodiversity
Conservation
Program 06

Biodiversity Conservation and Ecosystem Protection

Uganda is globally recognized for its rich biodiversity, yet ecosystem degradation threatens wildlife habitats and natural resource sustainability. NCCDO promotes community stewardship and environmental education to protect Uganda's natural heritage for future generations.

Community stewardship of wetlands and natural habitats
Support for protection of fish breeding areas
Environmental education programs in schools
Community environmental conservation committees
Partner: World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)
